ArtVan is a nonprofit, mobile art therapy organization founded in 2004. Traveling in a brightly painted van, professional staff travel to neighborhoods with art supplies selected for specially-designed themes. Meeting children, youth, and seniors where they are, weekly group art therapy sessions encourage well being and healing. Service communities presently include Bath, Brunswick, Lewiston, Auburn, Freeport, Rumford, and Mexico.
Position Overview
The Assistant Program Director/Art Therapist works alongside the Program Director/Art Therapist in designing, co-facilitating, and supporting all direct service programming, which includes networking with community partners. Programs serve individuals with diverse issues including abandonment, abuse, trauma, isolation, neglect, poor boundaries, undiagnosed and diagnosed mental health concerns and disabilities. This position also participates in grant and report writing, and the collection of stories, photos, and video to share across social media channels. Program hours vary during the week and season, including some evenings and weekends. Collaboration with all staff is essential.
This position reports to the Program Director/Art Therapist and collaborates closely with other staff.
Program Responsibilities
Collaborate with Program Director to plan art therapy sessions for a diverse range of participants
Co-facilitate art therapy sessions in a nonclinical setting with diverse populations
Build relationships with participants, helping them set personal goals and express themselves through art-making
Manage ArtVan storage area with other staff members on an ongoing basis
Network with nonprofits, schools and businesses to support new Community Partner Programs
Maintain and share photographic and written documentation of session highlights
Research and source art materials as sustainably as possible
Development & Communications Responsibilities
Assist Executive Director and Program Director/Art Therapist in research for grants, drafting proposal narratives, editing, and stories to be used in grant applications and reports
Create program-related written, photographic and videographic content for website, newsletters, and social media channels for sharing with Communication and Events Coordinator
Assist in fundraising and community outreach events as needed
Professional Development
Attend trainings and workshops supportive of ArtVan programming and professional development; obtaining and/or maintaining professional registration in arts-based therapeutic modality via appropriate credentialing association (i.e., IEATA, AATA)
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Art Therapy
Commitment to mission driven work
Work in a team environment
Experience working with youth and children in a group setting
Commitment to art as a transformative approach to well being
