Counsels individuals to help them understand and overcome issues that may affect their academic progress
Provides advisement on course and program selection, class scheduling, study habits, and career planning
Coordinates activities with staff, consultants, faculty, and/or volunteers
Assists with the planning and implementation of overall program
Confers with parents/guardians, teachers, school counselors, and administrators to resolve issues affecting students' academic progress
Makes regular presentations to schools, community organizations, and social service agencies
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Actively recruits students by distributing and collecting program applications; ensures that prospective participants are eligible as stipulated by program regulations
Uses interviews, transcripts, report cards, and tests to identify individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education
Conducts follow-up interviews with counselees to determine if their needs have been met
Plans trips and activities to expose students to colleges/universities and to provide cultural enrichment
Provides guidance to new program counselors
Assists in the development of flyers, newsletters, and/or brochures
Recommends purchases, e.g., equipment, educational materials, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS Please note that assigned tasks and responsibilities span both campuses for all MCCC positions.
ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Positions in this class typically require ability to use a key board, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Bachelor's degree in counseling or related field
Two (2) years' of experience in advising and counseling students toward entering an institution of postsecondary education
Two (2) years' of experience in working with economically and educationally disadvantaged youth
Two (2) years' of experience in recruiting middle school and high school students
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in counseling or related field
Experience using MS Office
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to represent program at schools, conferences, meetings, and seminars
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position
